Aerosol Can Disposal
All completely empty (and depressurized) aerosol cans in Massachusetts can be put in trash. These cans include household cleaner sprays, spray paints, and other pressurized aerosol cans.
If an aerosol can still has product, and more importantly a propellant, in it, it is considered Household Hazardous Waste (compressed gas), and needs to be managed as such. Items with the corrosive, explosive, flammable, or poisonous symbol must be dropped off for safe handling. Get more information about drop-off facilities and events near you on the Mass Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) website.
If a Tufts community member has a significant quantity of aerosol cans that are not empty and need to be properly disposed of, they can contact Jason Erbach (Jason.Erbach@tufts.edu of Tufts Environmental Health and Safety.
