Benefits Eligibility 2019

You must meet the following criteria to enroll in Tufts’ benefit plans:

Benefits-eligible Faculty and Staff

Staff: You are regularly scheduled to work 17.5 hours or more a week for a minimum 90-day employment period.

Faculty: You are half time or more, as determined by your academic department and have an appointment of at least two semesters.

Eligible Dependents: You are related to a benefits-eligible staff or faculty member as a legal spouse, domestic partner or child up to age 26, as defined in the 2019 Summary Plan Description (PDF).

International Employees

Tufts University offers global benefits for expatriates or locally hired non-US nationals who work abroad for a period of at least 180 days (6 months) in a consecutive 12-month period.

ACA-eligible Employees

Some Tufts faculty and staff are eligible to receive health benefits through the Affordable Care Act. To be eligible through the ACA, employees work 130+ hours per month over a 12-month period and are not otherwise eligible for health coverage through Tufts University.

Before an eligible employee is offered ACA benefits, there is a 12-month measurement period that begins on the first of the month after the date of hire, followed by a 30-day administrative assessment period. After that, Tufts has a 30-day period to offer the election to an eligible employee. By November 30 of each year thereafter, the university will evaluate the data based on the hours each employee works and notify the employee that he or she continues to be an ACA-eligible employee for health coverage for the next calendar year.

Postdoctoral Scholars

Tufts offers some benefits to postdoctoral scholars who work at least 17.5 hours per week.

When to Enroll

When You First Become Eligible
For most of the university's benefit plans, you must enroll within 31 days of the date you are first eligible for benefits. These benefits will be effective from your date of hire or the date you become newly eligible for benefits through Tufts University.

During Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment is a two-week period each year when you can enroll in or make changes to your core benefits. Open Enrollment typically takes place in October or November.

After a Qualifying Life Event
You can enroll in or change your benefits within 31 days of one of the following qualifying life events:

  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Change your spouse or qualified domestic partner’s employment status
  • New child
  • Death in your family
