Employee Driver Approval Process
Vehicle stewards must initiate the process to set up new drivers. If this is an urgent situation, please contact fleet@tufts.edu.
Tufts requires each driver to complete a motor vehicle record check. The criteria for approval is below. Vehicle record checks are conducted annually and the Fleet office will notify you when a renewal is needed. You can contact our office at fleet@tufts.edu.
Driver Criteria
In order to comply with the University Vehicle Fleet Policy you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Maintain a valid driver's license issued in the U.S. or Canada
- Have an acceptable motor vehicle record
- Abide by all state and federal rules while operating a University vehicle
- Ensure that all occupants, including the driver, are wearing seat belts at all times
- Not use any handheld or hands-free devices, or send/receive and read text messages while operating the vehicle
- Agreed to the Terms and Conditions of the University Fleet Policy
Revoked Authorization
The University obtains the right to revoke driver authorization if driver commits any of the following violations listed below, while operating a University vehicle.
- Committed a felony with a vehicle
- Leaving the scene of an accident
- Received multiple moving violations
Report Damages
You are required to report any damages to the vehicle you are operating to the vehicle steward assigned to that vehicle.
Traffic/Parking Tickets
Traffic violations and parking tickets incurred while driving a fleet vehicle are the responsibility of the Department that stewards the vehicle. The University is not responsible for paying any fines or fees incurred while driving a personal vehicle or rental vehicle.
