Enrolling in Benefits

When to Enroll

For most of the university’s benefit plans, you must enroll within 31 days of the date you are first eligible for benefits. These benefits will be effective from your date of hire or the date you become newly benefits eligible.

If you do not enroll within 31 days of your first day of eligibility, you will not be able to enroll until the next open enrollment period, which typically happens in October or November.

Who Is Eligible?

You must meet the following criteria to enroll in Tufts’ benefit plans:

  • Staff: Must be an employee regularly scheduled to work 17.5 hours or more a week, for a minimum 90-day appointment.
  • Faculty: Must work at least half time (as determined by your academic department) and have an appointment of at least two semesters.

You can also enroll your eligible dependents, including your legal spouse, qualified domestic partner, and children up to age 26, as defined in the Summary Plan Description.
