This policy applies to all staff, temporary staff, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, or any other members of the Tufts community who are paid directly by Tufts University or who work under faculty or postdoctoral scholar handbooks, or who are otherwise covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
The university recognizes your need to take time off when called to serve in local, state
and/or other jury duty. All employees are allowed time off to perform such civic service as required by applicable law. You are expected, however, to provide the university with proper notice of the request to perform jury duty and management should be informed of the expected length of jury duty service whenever possible. If the required absence presents a serious conflict for management, you may be asked to try to postpone jury duty. You must report back to work if excused by the court unless such a requirement is restricted by applicable law. You also must provide verification of service.
The university will pay the difference between your regular university pay and jury duty pay for up to three (3) days pursuant to a lawful jury summons , unless otherwise required by applicable law. If you serve beyond 3 days and choose to submit your court-provided per diem payment, you will receive your pay for your regularly scheduled hours. However, if you are an exempt employee, you are paid your full salary for any week in which you perform authorized work for the university.
Coordinate Leave in Advance
You should work with your supervisor to give notice of jury duty obligations with as much advance notice as possible to ensure the absence doesn’t adversely affect services or operations.
