Non-Resident Student Parking
State law requires Tufts University to post the following notice to all students who are not Massachusetts residents:
It is unlawful for a nonresident student to fail to file a nonresident driver statement with the police department located in the same city or town as the school or college attended, in accordance with Section 3 of Chapter 90 of the Massachusetts General Laws. Failure to file such statement is punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.
Under Massachusetts law, if out-of-state students bring cars to campus but choose not to register the car with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles then they must file a nonresident driver statement with the local police department. Regardless of whether they apply for on-campus parking, non-resident students are required to register as a non-resident driver. After filing the nonresident driver statement with the Transportation and Parking office, students will receive the nonresident student driver decal. This sticker is not valid for parking on Tufts’ campuses or within the Medford/Somerville city limits.
This decal must be prominently displayed in the uppermost center portion of the vehicle’s windshield.
Please fill out this Massachusetts RMV Form and email it to Parking@tufts.edu to receive your non-resident driver decal.
This permit does not allow for parking in campus lots and garages or on city streets requiring a permit. Please visit our Parking Permits page to purchase a Tufts University parking permit or the City of Somerville or Medford websites to purchase on-street parking permits for City managed roadways.
City-provided on-street parking permits require that residents register their vehicles in the state of Massachusetts but are provided at low cost to residents. These permits are effective parking options for students who live off-campus and require parking near their place of residence.
