Vehicle Towing Policy
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for the towing of vehicles parked on Tufts University property due to unpaid parking violations.
Policy
Unpaid Violations: Vehicles are subject to towing if they have multiple unpaid parking violations.
Violation Duration: A parking violation is considered unpaid if it remains unpaid for 60 days or more from the violation issue date.
Immediate Towing: Vehicles parked in a manner that violates safety regulations, including but not limited to blocking fire lanes, bike lanes, or handicapped access points, are subject to immediate towing without prior notice.
Notification of Towing Risk: Tufts will make efforts to contact the owner of a vehicle at risk of towing. Notice may be provided via email, mail, or note affixed to the vehicle. In the event a vehicle is towed, the owner is responsible for all costs associated with the tow.
Towing Process: Vehicles meeting the towing criteria will be towed and impounded at the owner's expense. The owner will be responsible for all towing and impound fees in addition to the payment of all outstanding parking violations.
Vehicle Retrieval: To retrieve an impounded vehicle, the owner must present proof of payment of all associated towing and impound fees. If the vehicle is not retrieved within a specified time period, additional storage fees may apply. A towed vehicle is subject to repeat towing after retrieval if associated parking violations remain unpaid.
Dispute Resolution: Disputes regarding towing due to unpaid violations should be directed to Tufts University Transportation and Parking Services. The dispute process will not delay the towing process but may result in a refund if the dispute is resolved in favor of the vehicle owner.
Additional Consequences: In addition to towing, vehicle owners with unpaid parking violations may face other consequences such as revocation of parking privileges on university property and referral to the Office of Community Standards for a review of a student’s conduct per the Student Code of Conduct.
