As you embark on a new school year, Tufts is excited to share with you some enhancements for faculty, advisors, and students regarding Preferred Pronouns in the Student Information System (SIS).
Students are now able to select one of three preferred pronoun series (he/him/his, she/her/hers, they/them/their) using new functionality in SIS. This information is viewable on class rosters, grade reports, and advisor screens. If a student updates this information before or at the start of the semester, professor and advisors will be able to see these preferences on their class rosters. Because students may elect to update their preferences throughout the year, it is important for faculty and advisors to review student information periodically. Students have also been advised to notify their faculty and advisors if any changes are made to their preferences.
As rosters are points of contact for many student and professor/advisor interactions, having updated information available and understood is important to student engagement. By faculty affirming these preferences, we show respect for our students which makes them more likely to come to class, engage with the faculty, and have an overall positive learning experience.
Here are a couple key resources to assist you:
- Pronoun Primer – Check out this document to learn more about what pronouns are, how they affect you, how they are being used, why they are important and where you can get support if needed.
- Online Guide in SIS– This document will walk you thru how-to find and see your students preferred name and/or pronouns in SIS.
Preferred Name Policy
As a reminder, in July, Tufts announced the adoption of a Preferred Name Policy for all members of the Tufts community allowing the selection of a preferred name on certain university systems—including the White Pages and @tufts.edu email, as well as on class and grade rosters—in place of their legal name (also called "Primary Name" in SIS). You may wish to take advantage of this option in a variety of circumstances, including:
- to select a name that better reflects your gender identity;
- to select a name that better reflects your marital status (married name, maiden name, hyphenated name, etc.); and/or
- to select a nickname, professional name or other variant that better reflects your personal identity.
NOTE: Since January 2016, students have been able to select a preferred name in SIS.
Having these two options – Preferred Name and Preferred Pronoun Series – available and understood, enables us to foster a culture of respect by acknowledging each other’s self-identified pronouns and preferred names.
Let’s all commit to this effort to ensure that respect at Tufts can spread into a campus culture!
