Safely Decommissioning Computer and Electronic Equipment: Protecting Your Data

As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Tufts Technology Services (TTS) wants to remind the community about the importance of securely decommissioning electronic equipment. Whether you're upgrading your computer, replacing a personal cell phone used for university business, or disposing of an old printer or scanner, it's essential to handle these devices with care to protect sensitive data.
Properly decommissioning electronic equipment not only helps safeguard the personal privacy of students, faculty, and staff, but also protects the university from potential financial and legal risks. Even devices with small storage capacities, like desktop printers or scanners, can retain confidential information if not properly wiped before disposal.
To support data security, we encourage all members of the Tufts community—especially those working remotely—to follow the university's guidelines for safely decommissioning devices. For more information on how to securely handle older electronics, visit the Tufts Decommissioning Process.
Taking the time to securely dispose of electronic devices ensures that sensitive data remains protected and helps us all contribute to a safer university environment.
