Amended date: 12/01/2018
All Tufts staff members, not otherwise hired under contract or bound by collective bargaining agreement, are considered at-will. The first three months of employment are considered a trial period, during which regular meetings should be scheduled for employees to receive feedback and guidance about their performance. The conditions of this trial period are outlined in the policy, below.
All new hires must successfully complete a trial period before they are eligible for the University’s paid time off programs for vacation, sick, and personal days.
During their trial periods, new hires are entitled to paid time off only for University-observed holidays. New hires terminated during their trial periods may not contest their terminations through the University’s internal grievance process.
The trial period normally runs for three (3) months from the date of hire, but a supervisor, in consultation with the Human Resources Department, may extend an employee’s trial period for up to an additional three (3) months. If this occurs, the supervisor must notify the employee in writing. The total trial period should not exceed six (6) months.
If an employee is promoted or transferred to another position, a new trial period will commence, during which the employee will be eligible for sick, vacation and job protection benefits but may not contest termination through the internal grievance process.
Successful completion of the trial period establishes the employee’s rights to certain benefits and other rights under this Policies and Procedures but does not otherwise negate the at-will status of the employee.
Staff: any benefits-eligible employee who has standard hours of 17.5 hours/week or more and is not otherwise covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Postdoctoral scholars’ hiring practices are outlined in the postdoc handbook. Faculty should refer to the by-laws of their primary school affiliation for guidance.
